I normally get really into holidays, especially Halloween since it’s basically the kick-off to my favorite season! Although, we’re leaving for Hawaii this weekend so I’ve had bikinis and pina coladas on my mind lately! However, I just partnered with one of my favorite clothing companies, Mini Boden, to bring you guys some cute Halloween looks for the kiddos and a fun DIY that definitely snapped me right into the spooky spirit.
Mini Boden makes really high-quality pieces that are comfortable (not itchy) and have a mix-and-match ability. I love even more that their message to kids is “if you can dream it, you can be it.” They strive to encourage kids to be whoever they want to be. I absolutely love that, so when picking out the clothes, I let the older girls have at it and pick out whatever they wanted! I was actually super impressed with what they put together, although they couldn’t really go wrong with the choices.
Lainey chose the Boo-gie Nights T-shirt (it glows in the dark, which was the big appeal) with the Simple Colorful Skirt in pink with these Patterned Footless Tights with cats on the bottom and then these Pompom Suede boots that she is obsessed with!
Leighton instantly fell in love with this Kitty Velvet dress (she loves anything with cats!), the same tights as Lainey, because again… cats, and then she went big with these glitter boots! You should have seen her face when these arrived, she was so excited!
Mia wore this adorable pleated dress! I saw it and knew she had to have it! I love the sweet collar and how classic this dress is. It’s also super soft. I paired it with these ribbed tights and these cute leather shoes (they are really soft and easy for her to walk in and easy to get on and off!)
All of these pieces are perfect for the kiddos to wear to school the week of Halloween!
So now that we had festive clothes, we wanted to make some kind of spooky sweet treat (you know how much we love to bake). We decided to make these monster Rice Krispie Treats but the girls wanted to change the name to Rice Kreepy Treats! They were so easy to make and allowed the girls to get creative. It probably took us one hour from start to finish. Here’s how we made them:
Rice Kreepy Treats
What you’ll need:
- Candy Melts (I bought yellow, orange and white then used food coloring)
- Candy Eyes (I used small, medium and large)
- Cooking Oil
- A Batch of Rice Krispie Treats
- Food coloring (I used blue and green but you can use whatever colors you want!)
I made mine in a 9″ x 13″ baking pan, dumped them onto a cutting board and cut them into rectangles.
I followed the directions on the back of the bag of candy melts, which was pretty much to microwave them on 50% power for 1 minute, stir, and keep microwaving at 50% power for 30 seconds at a time until they are completely melted.
I also recommend adding a little bit of cooking oil after they’re melted. Maybe 1/2 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon per 1/2 cup of candy melts. It really helps to thin it it out. The more oil you add, the smoother the finish will be after you dip the Rice Krispie Treats. If you don’t add any oil at all, the finish will be bumpy.
Just remember, the more oil you add to the candy melts, the smoother the finish will be, BUT the longer it will take to harden and the easier it will melt.
Once the candy melts are melted, dip the rice krispie treat to get one end completely covered. I used a butter knife to scrape off the excess and make it more even all around.
Also, make sure to set them on parchment paper to dry or it will be hard to get them off!
Then add the candy eyes in any spooky combination you like! For the big eyes especially, put them in place, then gently push them slightly towards the top of the monster’s “head”. This gives them an eyelid look.
Let them sit at room temperature for about 40 minutes or so to completely harden!
Oh! One last tip. To make the green ones, I melted the yellow candy melts then added one little drop of green food coloring and it made them the perfect “Zombie Green”.
I hope you guys try these, they’re perfect for any Halloween party! I’d love to see pics if you do!
Have a great week!! Time to get packin’ for our trip!
